Trolling is one of the most commonly used fishing techniques, which allows us to cover a wide distance when dragging moving baits from a boat. The objective of the captures, with this technique, are the great tuna, mahi-mahis, albacores, swordfish and marlins - in the oceans where they are found–. Fishing distances The distances to start fishing are very relative, since depending on our fishing area we will have more or less depth. In function of the water edges, we will begin to fish. For example, in the case of Blanes (Costa Brava) the fishing distance will be about 15 miles from the port, with a depth of 1000 meters, reaching 36 miles where there are 2500 meters. However, the swordfish and the Mediterranean spearfish are usually found in waters of 500 meters to about 6 miles from the port. HOW TO SEARCH FOR POSSIBLE CATCHES We will head towards changes of banks, for example from 1000 to 1500 meters. In these drastic depth changes we always have currents that change direction and that is where the fish are, and we can also find them in warmer temperature changes. In this mode the probe will detect bait stocks and the depth in which they are, as well as the temperature of the water, since we will always have to look for warmer waters. Also, the seagulls also tell us where the sardine stocks are when flying in circles or heading directly to the water. ROD DISTRIBUTION AND BAIT DISTANCES The way in which we distribute the rods will depend a lot on the boat with which we go out to fish, but it can serve as a reference to place eight rods helping us with the lateral outriggers, which will allow us to separate four lines to avoid tangling and cover more area. As a reference, the following bait distance from the stern is useful: the first rod at 85 m, the second at 70 m, the third at 60 m, the fourth at 50 m, the fifth at 40 m, the sixth at 35 m, the seventh at 30 m and the eighth at 20 m. This way, the baits will be in the shape of a "V". This is the way to start our fishing day. If we had several bites with the same distance, we would place some bait in the same place to have more bites. If the sea is very flat, it is advisable to put an exciter on each end of the longest lines. |

THE INDICATED SPEED For deep-sea fishing, among the many existing reels, we highly recommend the Shimano Tiagra 30 wrls with two speeds, the rods of the Penn company weighing 30 pounds with aluminum handle and rings of Aftco rollers. For this fishing, we will use a large hand net to recover the catch without damaging it and be able to release it, after photographing. We will have at least two combat belts that will allow us to recover the catch without suffering any damage, the Play Action is a comfortable belt and at the same time very fast to put on. We must remember to take aboard some good pliers, so that in case of getting a fishhook in the skin we can cut it and extract it without difficulty. |
