By Cristina Escribano

The Big Game Fishing World Championship will be held in Sodwana Bay on the north coast of KwaZulu Natal (South Africa) from 11 to 15 February. A fantastic place for fishing where you can get numerous and varied species.

The days properly dedicated to competition are from 12 to 14 and the day of 11 is reserved for training and 15 for the awards ceremony. Both for the official training and during the championship, the organizers will provide the boats, which will have a maximum of three crew - captain of the team, skipper and mate, who will also be judge. Likewise, the boats with the South African team will also have a judge of different nationality. Everything is prepared not to favour any country. The length of the boats will range from 7.50 m to 12 m, with an average cruising speed of 18 knots.

An opening ceremony will be held in Johannesburg on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sandton Convention Centre, so those wishing to attend the opening ceremony must make their own arrangements to travel from Sodwana to Durban, fly to Johannesburg and stay in a hotel, but there is also the option of staying in Sodwana Bay from February 9.

For the competition the available boats will be from 7,5 to 12 m, with an average cruising speed of 18 knots.

On Sunday 10 February, crews are expected to travel to Sodwana and begin preparations for the next day. The boat that, by drawing lots, goes to a team on the first day of the competition, will be the one that must be used in the training sessions prior to the championship. The next day, after distributing the bag for food and bait, the fishing day prior to the competition will begin and at 4 pm the crews will arrive.

During the first day of competition the bags with food will be handed over, as every day, and the boats will be assigned, and, after an intense day of fishing, at 19.30 h the provisional classification will be published and half an hour later there will be dinner. These are the parameters established for three rounds of competition, governed by the FIPS-M regulations, and on Friday there will be a closing ceremony, award ceremony for the champions and gala dinner. Valid species and scores Numerous species can be counted on to score, black and blue marlin (50 points) and stripped marlin (30 points), sailfish (20 points) and wahoos and all types of tuna (5 points). For species without beaks, the competition rules establish a minimum size of 750 mm from the nose to the tail. Each boat will be given a rod to know if the piece meets the minimum requirement. In case of doubt, the rod is placed in the water next to the judge and the judge will decide if the fish can count.
