Which reel to buy

By Cristina Escribano

Fishing gear can be decisive when it comes to achieving one result or another. Depending on the technique we want to practice, we choose one reel or another because of the many differences between them but according to expert opinion, we can also have multipurpose material.

We can find fixed or rotating spool reels. The first ones, although we can possibly relate them with trolling, we also find them in reels for jigging practice. Probably the most used, they have two positions to collect and release the filament. Regarding the one to collect there is a safety activated, so that when a catch bites and pulls our equipment, the reel is blocked to not let go more line. In the second position, the reel picks up the same way it releases, position that we will use if what we want is to release line..

On the other hand, the rotating coil reels offer a ratio -relation between the turns that the coil turns for each turn of crank- of slow pick-up, that together with a short diameter of coil, allows to manipulate the heavy artificial ones. The reel, being located on top of the rod, avoids the blows with the boat, and its brakes.

We usually see the ratio inscribed on the coil of the reels with figures such as 6:1, 4,1:1, so we will know according to the number the times the thread passes through the coil. Those of low ratio are indicated for fishing with bait, also for the types of fishing in which the pieces are large, as in the case of trolling, in which there are models with 2:1 numbering. It is advisable to use a certain ratio or another so as not to make an unnecessary physical effort, nor to damage the machinery of the reel.

Perhaps a decisive aspect in the choice of purchase of a reel is the weight of the same, which is related to the material with which it is manufactured. Although most of them are made of lightweight materials, graphite or metal alloys, some parts of steel or heavy materials may increase the weight. When lifting by hand, in techniques such as stand up, spinning or jigging, we prefer a light one. However, in Big Game, if we use it from a rod holder or from the fighting chair, the weight is compensated when the angler is strong.

A reel has greater or lesser capacity, apart from its size, by the type of filament that we are going to use depending on the thickness. The small spinning reels are designed to contain small diameter thread and in a Big Game reel braided filament will be used to resist strong combats. At this point, it is recommended that the reel be full to the max. It will not be useful to carry 120 m of thread and fish in depths of 220. Aspects such as the quality of the bearing, the power, the distance to throw and the weight of the catch determine to choose a reel ultralight 1000-2000, light 2500-3000, medium 4000, medium heavy 5000 or heavy 7000.
